Garment Sewing 101

  • Black Hole Studio 3621 McCausland Ave St. Louis, MO, 63139 United States (map)

Do you dream of sewing your own clothes? Clothes that fit YOUR body, are made out of fabric that speaks to you, and are completely one-of-a-kind? I know the idea of garment sewing can be intimidating, but I promise you can do it if you let yourself try something new.

**************

If you’re ready to jump into the world of garment sewing, then join me for a 2-session course at Black Hole Studio where we will sew an indie sewing pattern together from start to finish.

The Hansie Top from indie pattern company Seamwork, is the perfect garment to start your clothes-sewing journey. It's the wardrobe staple of dreams, can be dressed up or down, worn with pants or a skirt, and can go from season to season. It’s the top we buy over and over but never realized we could make to fit the way we want.

The Details:

This course is divided into two sessions. It is designed to go through the process of sewing a garment in a small group setting from start to finish. We will be moving along together, but I will be floating between participants, answering all your questions as you sew along. Below is a breakdown of each session:

  • Week 1, Wednesday May 6: measure our bodies, choose the correct size, learn how to grade between sizes, cut out pattern pieces.

  • Week 2, Wednesday May 13: SEWING!!!!

This is a beginner level course, but you must be familiar with a sewing machine and have finished a few sewing projects before trying this one. Trust me - you don’t want to be learning how to use a machine while also learning to sew darts ;)

Some elements you will be learning as you sew are:

  • Measuring your body & choosing your size

  • How to read a pattern

  • Learn how to grade between sizes

  • What type of fabric should I use?

  • Sew through the pattern together

  • Finishing techniques

What to bring:

- fabric : You will need woven fabric for this pattern. Do yourself a favor and keep it simple; plain cotton will be easiest to sew and is most widely available. Don’t want to spend a lot?? Get yourself a pair of thrifted cotton sheets - I promise they won’t look like sheets when you’re finished!

- notions : A spool of matching thread

- pattern : Please bring your printed pattern to the class ready to use. (make sure to have it taped together beforehand; you don’t want to waste precious sewing time taping!!) Find the pattern HERE

- sewing machine: There are 3 studio machines up for grabs, but you are welcome to bring your own machine. Details on how to reserve a studio machine are listed below.
