Beginner Pattern Drafting: Tiered Skirt

  • Black Hole Studio 3621 McCausland Ave St. Louis MO (map)

Do you dream of sewing your own clothes? Clothes that fit YOUR body, are made out of fabric that speaks to you, and are completely one-of-a-kind? I know the idea of pattern drafting can be intimidating, but we will walk through the steps together to give you the bespoke skirt of your dreams!

Join me as we follow Sydney Graham’s tutorial for how to create a tiered skirt drafted to your personal measurements. This is going to be a fun one!

Elements you will be learning in this class:

  • Measuring your body to find the correct measurements

  • Understanding ease

  • What type of fabric should I use?

  • Creating pattern pieces

  • Sewing techniques: gathering, elastic insertion, finishing techniques

What to bring:

- fabric : You will need at least 3 yards of a woven fabric for this project; the exact amount will depend on your measurements. I recommend bringing a simple cotton for your first version - thrifted cotton sheets are a fabulous and cheap choice!

- elastic : the amount you need will depend on your waist measurement, but 2 yards is a good amount to bring.

This is an advanced beginner level course, but you must be familiar with a sewing machine and have finished a few garment sewing projects before trying this one. Trust me - you don’t want to be learning how to use a machine while also learning how to gather!
